Car Rental Tips
1. Avoid Airport Surcharges
Airports naturally charge a first-rate for the ease of picking up your car right after your flight and dropping it off right before the exit flight. Every now and then the handiness for us is worth the fee, but occasionally it’s not. Many times the car rental offices to be found inside the city offer lower charges so weigh your options if it’s worth it for you to get to the city first and then rent.
2. You May Not Need Insurance
Car rental agencies find it irresistible to up sell you on their indemnity plans. It starts during the booking procedure and will carry on when you arrive at the office to pick up your car. Occasionally, we graciously decline and they don’t press any further. Other times, we have refused insurance and they go on to scare the stuffing out of you until you give in and buy their outrageous insurance plan.
3. Get the Right Card
Having the right Credit Card matters too. Check out before leaving on your holiday if your particular Bank Credit Card provides any offers or deals with Car Rental Companies. Many times some Credit Cards do come with some primary rental insurance offers.
4. Do Your Homework
Before you reserve a rental car do our due diligence online first. Typically start by a little Google search. It never hurts. Check with multiple Car Rental websites or other price comparison websites to get an idea of what a car rental will cost you. When booking with a larger company you can go directly to their website to get the best price.
5. Take Reviews with a Grain of Salt
Take note of concern about customer service, cleanliness, and quality of cars, or branches inclination to over bill and accidentally charge your credit card. Again, do your enquiries before booking.
6. Fill the Tank up Yourself
It may seem really suitable to have the car rental company to fill the gas tank back up when you drop off the car, and it is! If you got the car with a full tank in it to make sure to plan extra time in your day to fill up the car before you return it. Rental car companies will charge a premium on the gas in lieu of your ease. There is also the option to prepay for petrol or diesel. In Goa the rate of Petrol is cheaper than in other states of India, but you’re buying a full tank and the rental car company is making a bet you won’t bring it back at exactly zero. So, most times they win on the prepaid fuel.
7. Don’t Walk Up
Just like flight tickets, you’re going to find the best car rental rate beforehand and much in advance online. Whenever you are booking a car with less than 24 hours advance notice your rates may be very high, as it looks like an emergency situation. Always aim to rent a car with at least 24 hours notice.
8. Stick to One Driver always
Many times you will be charged extra driver fees if you want to add a second driver, when driving extremely long distances or interstate or on overnight journeys.
9. Be 21+
In Goa, Car Rental Companies are more confident and comfortable when a Man of sufficient adult age or when Families approach for a Rental car. Generally 21 plus of age for both sexes is sufficient along with a Valid Indian Driving Licence.
11. Don’t Get a GPS
Car rental companies absolutely love it when you add a GPS onto your rental for an extra charge a day. Avoid this charge by using your Smartphone for navigation.
12. Inspect and Take Photos
If you run into a railing with your rental car you’re going to be charged for car body damages. If someone else ran into a guardrail before you and you don’t note it when you pick up the rental car you could also still be charged for damages. Always, always, always, inspect every single rental car you get with great detail – inside and out. Note any damages with the car rental company and take photos just in case.
